Isham Keith First was Captain, Co G, 22nd IN; fought at Springfield and Pea Ridge, AR, and Corinth, MS; advanced to Lieutenant Colonel, commander of the 22nd IN. Was among troops entering New Orleans, LA in May of 1862. Also at Houma, LA. In Oct of that year, they encountered the 6th and 2nd AR troops at Perryville, KY. Night was falling, as the two sides came into dim view of each other, and firing began. The opposing Major General, Leonitas Polk, believing this was a case of CSA firing upon its own men, rode up to Keith, and ordered a ceasefire, just at that moment realizing these were Yankees. Yet, being unrecognized, in his dark coat, Polk pretended to be Keith’s superior, and rode down, behind the line of Federals, bellowing successfully for a halt to the firing. Once back in the woods, and making his way to the Confederate forces, Polk ordered them to reload, hastily, and pointed out the enemy, commanded by Keith. In the ensuing roar of shot, Keith was struck, along with many of his men, and died on the field.

The Battle flowed on South six miles to Mine Creek, 25 Oct 1864, where he participated in defeating the Confederate Army there. The Battle of Mine Creek was the only full fledged battle between Union and CSA troops in Kansas.
